Let’s revisit the 11 stars who helped Manchester City defeat Chelsea 3-2 to claim the 2012 Community Shield, as covered by GOAL.
Goalkeeper: Costel Pantilimon | Free Agent
Manchester City entered the 2012 Community Shield with their first-choice goalkeeper, Joe Hart, not fully fit. Costel Pantilimon stepped up as the starter.
The Romanian goalkeeper had limited appearances for the Citizens before leaving in 2014. After his contract with Turkey’s Denizlispor ended in March 2021, Pantilimon remains without a club.
Center-Back: Pablo Zabaleta | Retired
Zabaleta joined Manchester City in 2008, just before the Abu Dhabi group’s takeover. The right-back became a cornerstone during his nine years at the Etihad.
He moved to West Ham in 2017 and retired in October 2020.
Center-Back: Vincent Kompany | Head Coach, RSC Anderlecht
Vincent Kompany was pivotal in Manchester City’s rise to domestic dominance. Despite frequent injuries, the club captain remained a vital presence.
Since leaving in 2019, City have struggled to replace him. While Ruben Dias shows promise, Kompany has pursued coaching, currently serving as head coach of Anderlecht.
Center-Back: Stefan Savic | Atletico Madrid
Signed for £6 million in 2011, Savic disappointed at Manchester City with costly errors. After one season, he was sold to Fiorentina.
The move revitalized the Montenegrin’s career. He’s now among Atletico Madrid’s finest defenders.
Right Midfielder: James Milner | Liverpool
James Milner’s two seasons at Manchester City were unremarkable. In 2015, despite a lucrative four-year, £165,000-a-week contract offer, he left for more playing time.
Milner joined Liverpool, where he remains a key figure.
Central Midfielder: Nigel de Jong | Al-Shahania SC
The Dutch midfielder spent three seasons at Manchester City, from 2009 to 2012, as part of the club’s early wave of big signings to elevate their status.
After losing manager Roberto Mancini’s trust, de Jong left in 2012 for AC Milan. He later played for LA Galaxy, Galatasaray, and now Qatar’s Al-Shahania SC.
Central Midfielder: Yaya Toure | Assistant Coach, Akhmat Grozny
Yaya Toure was a cornerstone of Manchester City’s transformation under their Arab owners. His power and pace fueled numerous successes, cementing the club’s Premier League dominance.
Leaving in 2018, he played in Greece and China before retiring. Toure now serves as an assistant coach at Russia’s Akhmat Grozny.
Left Midfielder: Aleksandar Kolarov | Inter Milan
Kolarov joined Manchester City in 2010, scoring 21 goals and providing 37 assists in 234 appearances. He won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, and an FA Cup.
In 2017, he moved to AS Roma and later joined Inter Milan, where he plays today.
Attacking Midfielder: Samir Nasri | Free Agent
Joining Manchester City from Arsenal in 2011, Samir Nasri showed immense promise with standout performances. However, off-field controversies and a lack of discipline derailed his career.
After Anderlecht terminated his contract in 2020 for disciplinary issues, the French midfielder remains without a club.
Forward: Carlos Tevez | Free Agent
Carlos Tevez joined Manchester City in 2009 from rivals Manchester United, scoring 73 goals in 148 appearances before moving to Juventus in 2013.
In 2017, he became the world’s highest-paid player at Shanghai Shenhua. After returning to Boca Juniors in 2018, he left in 2021 and has yet to find a new team.
Forward: Sergio Aguero | Barcelona
Sergio Aguero is among Manchester City’s greatest-ever players. Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, he scored 257 goals in 384 matches, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer.
In the 2011/12 season, his dramatic goal against QPR clinched the Premier League title, dethroning Manchester United. After a decade of loyalty, Aguero left when his contract expired this summer, joining Barcelona on a free transfer.
